Today’s progress:
Project: Shaede draft four and a bit
New words: 2,026
Total word count: 29,098
Goal: 85,000 words (or thereabouts)
Writing: Was fairly good today, albeit slow. I managed to rework a scene that’s supposed to be emotionally intense into something that feels intense, rather than being something that goes by in the blink of an eye.
Real life: Suffering with a mild cold, so I’m slowed down in general. Cleaned the house, did two loads of laundry and even managed to get out into the garden for a short while. I guess I’m not slowed down that much.
Total words for 2008: 392,769.
Yes, I’m feeling happy enough about this rewrite that the full stats return. I like seeing that little word metre creep up. Though it does pain me to know that I was much further along before I realised I had to go back and do major surgery. I hate having to go back to the beginning, but it had to be done. You all probably look at me doing this and groan. But essentially, I’m still learning my craft here, and I’m honing the way that I work. One of the drawbacks to the way that I edit is this – I don’t work well at going back and just doing line edits. I have to retype everything for my brain to register what I’m doing, which slows me down. But it works for me.
I’m still aiming for something around the 85k mark. I also have a couple of short flashback sections that I want to insert, but I’m at a loss as to where they can go (or if they’re even necessary). They may need to wait until I’ve finished revising this draft.
Anyway. A smallish word count for the day, but acceptable. I’m still keeping 2k as my goal for the day (though I’d still love to aim higher) at the moment. I also want to start doing some research and planning for another novel that’s brewing somewhere with the men in the basement.
I’d like to push for more words, but it’s not going to happen today. For we will be heading out in a few hours to go and see Bill Bailey live. Along with half of my Perth-based livejournal flist, I believe
