Getting back into writing.
Apr. 7th, 2010 11:15 amLife seems to be slowly reasserting itself into something approaching a new kind of normal. Liam is four months old now, and has just moved through a fussy period. He’s more settled now, which means that he’s actually napping (and not needing to be held for the whole nap) and going down to sleep at night easier. I’m not counting on this lasting, mind you. But for now, it means that I have more energy and focus. And we all know what that means – writing.
I’ve slipped into a bit of a habit of opening up Scrivener and doing some work in the evenings after Liam is in bed. Not a lot of work, but some – I’ve mostly been working on character sketches and have started some rough outlining. Yes, I am actually outlining. I figure it’s a good thing to work on right now – I can mull over the story in my head all day and then jot down some notes in the evening.
I’d forgotten how enjoyable it can be starting a new story and getting to know the characters. I dreamed about being Ajae, my protagonist, last night, which indicates that she’s starting to take hold and become real. And I know that kind of sounds nuts, but other writers will understand.
And while we’re sounding nuts here. I actually thought that I had one main story arc figured out. But when I started writing up another character (who I thought would be minor) he kind of started to take over and demanded that he belonged to that story arc instead. Well, okay. He’s going to be an awful lot of fun to write, actually. I’m looking forward to getting into actual writing some time, but for now, this is working well.
